How to read it

The big number compares the 60 minutes after the release with the same clock hour on a fixed set of 120 ordinary weekdays (76 for crypto), measured on one minute prices. 2.0x means the price swung twice as far as usual.

The percentage is how often the hour beat the rougher quarter of ordinary hours. Ordinary hours do that 25% of the time, so 25% means no different from normal and 90% means almost every time.

What it never says is which way the price went. We tested simple rules that try to profit from these hours and none made money after costs. See what we tested.

Numbers from the 28 October 2026 briefing: currencies and gold on every monthly announcement since 2018 (about 95 of each) and every Fed decision since 2021 (45); crypto since 2021 (60 of each, 46 Fed decisions). SA times are an hour later from 1 November to mid March, while US clocks are on winter time. Release dates from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, Census Bureau, BEA, ISM and the Federal Reserve.
